If you are planning to have a new Smartphone by selling the old one then it is important to perform some tasks in order to keep the private data private as anyone can retrieve the sensitive data using some software that you have deleted from your phone.
Just deleting the data of phone is not enough rather you need to back up all the data before you remove everything completely from your phone so that all these data could be transferred to the new phone. The things that you should do before selling your phone are explained below.
Backup all your data online
This is the first and foremost step before selling the Smartphone. If you are having an android phone then backup all the data in Google Drive and in case of iOS device use iCloud for data backup. Images, videos, games, apps and the home Wi-Fi settings also could be saved in the iCloud and Google Drive.
For Android devices such as Galaxy S9 go to settings>Account>Google account and select all the data you want to sync for backup.
If you have a iPhone or any other Apple product you can follow below process. Before I sold my iPhone, I took backup. The same process would be applied for upcoming iPhone 9 as well which is coming in September 2018.
In iOS it can be done by going to settings>iCloud and make the slider green for the data that you want to back up. Next, select ‘storage and backup’ and then ‘Backup now’, this might take few minutes to few hours depending on the data you have.
All the android and iOS users also can use Flickr for backup the data as it comes with 1TB free storage while you will get only few GB free storage space in Google Drive and iCloud.
Backup data on Computer
Data can be backup in the computer also using an USB cable. In case your internet is running slow you can go for this option. But iOS users need to use iTunes software for storing the data in computer.
But this is a few steps process in iPhone and you have to sign out from iCloud and delete the account from your phone. Next go to settings>General> Reset >Erase all the contents and settings. All the data from your phone will be deleted.
But if you have lost the phone then wipe all the data from your phone using the ‘Find My iPhone service’.
If you are shifting to android device from iOS then de-register the phone number from iMessage service.
Remove SIM card and memory card.
Final thing is to remove the SIM card and memory card from your phone for using them on the new device.
The most important thing is that never delete anything manually as it will delete data from iCloud also. This is same for an Android phone also if you use Google Drive to backup all the data.
So follow all the above steps before selling your phone to maintain privacy.
